Based onUsing thisthe methodology a new taxonomy is proposed and the implications of its facets (and their combinations of facets)are demonstrated. A methodology is then presented to construct a taxonomy of virtual reality and augmented reality applications based on a combination of: a faceted analysis approach for the overall design of the taxonomy an existing taxonomy of educational objectives to derive the educational purpose an information systems analysis to establish important facets of the taxonomy and two systematic mapping studies to identify categories within each facet. Several such occasions of confusion are presented. This paper presents and analyses existing taxonomies of virtual and augmented reality and demonstrates knowledge gaps and mixed terminology which may cause confusion among educators, researchers, and developers. Further, a biologist-driven use-case is presented, in which immersive environments facilitate biologists to explore and compare the heart expression profiles of different genes. By implementing the system in two separate immersive environments, fish tank virtual reality (FTVR) and head-mounted display virtual reality (HMD-VR), biologists can interact with the data in novel ways not previously possible, such as visually exploring the gene expression patterns of an organ, and comparing genes based on their 3D expression profiles. To address this challenge, VR-Cardiomics is presented, which is a novel data visualization system with interactive functionalities designed to help biologists interpret spatially resolved transcriptomic datasets.

Upon data acquisition, one major hurdle is the subsequent interpretation and visualization of the datasets acquired. Spatially resolved transcriptomics is an emerging class of high-throughput technologies that enable biologists to systematically investigate the expression of genes along with spatial information.

In addition to describing the characteristics of RAM, we will also analyze studies in which RAM has been used in virtual modality to provide suggestions into RAM building in immersive modality. RAM is a behavioral ecological task that allows the analyses of different facets of spatial memory, distinguishing declarative components from procedural ones. We stipulate that an immersive Radial Arm Maze (RAM) is an excellent instrument, allowing the participants to be physically active within the maze exactly as in the walking RAM version in reality modality. However, navigational tasks are still not completely adapted in immersive 3D VR systems. In recent years, human spatial navigation has increasingly been studied in interactive virtual environments. Virtual Reality (VR) emerges as a promising technology capable of creating different scenarios in which the body, environment, and brain are closely related, proving enhancements in the diagnosis and treatment of several spatial memory deficits. We conclude that head coupling is probably more important than stereo in D visualization and that head coupling and stereo combined provide an important enhancement to monitor based computer graphics. The error rates for stereo alone and head coupling alone were 14.7% and 3.2% respectively. The error rates ranged from 22% in the pictorial display, to 1.3% in the head coupled stereo display. Experiment 2 involved subjects tracing a path from a leaf of a 3D tree to the correct root (there were two trees intermeshed). Experiment 1 involved the subjective comparison of pairs of viewing conditions and the results suggest that head coupling may be more important than stereo in yielding a strong impression of three dimensionality. In addition, we report the experimental investigation of the following variables: 1) whether or not the perspective view is coupled to the actual viewpoint of the observer, 2) whether stereopsis is employed. We discuss some of the relative merits of this mode of viewing as compared to head mounted stereo displays.

The defining characteristics of what we call “Fish Tank Virtual Reality” are a stereo image of a three dimensional (3D) scene viewed on a monitor using a perspective projection coupled to the head position of the observer.
